Very few people know how to handle the eventual passing of a dog. Like any other best friend, the loss of a pet comes as a shock, even if they were in declining health or of old age. It just doesn’t make sense. The dog you’ve had for so many years all of a sudden leaves your side, and you have to adjust to your day without them.
The first few days will be the hardest. You’ll want to take him or her to the vet or local crematory to have the remains cremated privately. You’ll slowly begin to remove his or her crate, toys, food bowls, and leashes, to remove any constant reminders. If you have children, they will likely be as upset as you are, asking questions and expressing all sorts of emotions.
The best thing to do is to take care of yourself and your needs first. This is a grieving process, but it will get better over time. Remember the other times when you’ve lost a pet or a loved one, and know that in time the pain will be replaced with the happy memories of the two of you together.
In the weeks after the passing, you will search for a way to commemorate the life you and your dog shared. The ashes of your pet do not have to sit in an urn, but can rather turn into something beautiful, something to wear around your heart forever.
Flowers Forever makes some of the most beautiful and valuable dog memorial necklaces for you to celebrate life, and heal after a loss. Our two dog-themed pieces, the Dog Bone Pendant and the Pawprints On My Heart necklace are some of our customer favorites.
